NEW Driver Education Program

Cours de conduite automobile - Personne avec son permis en mainIn Quebec, the new mandatory Driver Training Program has been implemented since January 17th 2010. The programme is divided in 4 phases where Classroom modules alternate with In-Car Sessions. The course consists of 12 two-hour theory modules and 15 In-Car Sessions.

Within each phase, some modules are interchangeable but it is recommended to take them in the preprogrammed order.

In each one of the phases, self-learning periods are highly recommended. You can learn on your own via the SAAQ website and by using your Tecnic handbook “To Master Driving.”.

Phase 1 (Prerequisites for the Learner’s Licence)

This phase must be spread over at least one month. It consists of 5 modules. On the 5th module the student is evaluated at the School. If he succeeds, he is given an attestation that entitles him to go and pass an eye test at the SAAQ. Then after paying the required fees, he obtains his learner’s permit.

Phase 2 (Guided Driving)

This phase must also be spread over at least a full month. Accompanying riders are invited to attend module 6 in the classroom. It is recommended to wait till phase 3 before the student begins practicing with his accompanying rider. That gives the in-car instructor enough time to make sure the learner faithfully implements the basics.

Phase 3 (Semi-Guided Driving)

This phase must be spread over at least two months. The student will be given 2 formative practical evaluations on In-Car Sessions 5 and 10. It is possible to combine 2 In-Car Sessions in order to give a two-hour practice. Module 10 must be given after the first 4 In-Car Sessions of phase 3 have been completed. It is recommended to give the students a few weeks of free time between phases 3 and 4 so that they can practice driving with their accompanying riders..

Phase 4 (From Semi-Guided to Independent Driving)

This phase must be spread over at least two months. Once a student had had his Learner’s Licence for 10 months and after he attended Module 12, he may take his SAAQ knowledge test. It is possible to combine 2 In-Car Sessions in order to give a two-hour practice.

In-Car Sessions 12 and 13 must be combined in a two-hour Session on the road with 2 learners in the vehicle. Each Learner, in turn, is the observer and then the driver. In-Car Session 15 is a Synthesis Session prior to the road test. This Session must be given after the SAAQ knowledge test.
